Been away during the weekend. To Skellefteå in the north of Sweden, to watch a play about two fantastic painters: Berta Hansson and Anna Nordlander. Berta Hansson was a school teacher in Fredrika but she loved to paint. She also loved her pupils — they became her favorite motifs. “The child in the world, the world in the child”, she has written.  Anna Nordlander left Skellefteå and started to study at the art school and the Fruntimmersavfdelningen (the departement for women) in 1866.

The play discussed the difficulties a woman met in society when she wanted to choose a life of her own, to follow her longing. Still there can be hard to follow one’s longing, for everyone. But that’s just how it is. I do not believe in the over optimistic ideal that states that everyone can do everything if you just keep on struggling. Unfortunately that is not how the world is, and it can never be. To live is to struggle, to work hard and enjoy it.
