Light is caught in the net in one of the large paintings by artist Ludmila Pawlowska. Today the exhibition Icons in transformation / Ikoner i förvandling in the church of Gottsunda in Uppsala opened, the colours blue and gold are dominating the room.

In the middle the artist has built a huge crown of thorns, the symbole for suffering is the heart of the exhibition.

But the suffering does not stand alone, it is surrounded by eyes, gold and fragments of doors.

Ludmila Pawlowska began painting work of art inspired by icons after the death of her mother.  She visited russian friends, churches and talked to priests about her loss. Everywhere she met eyes looking at her – the silent, motionless, warm gaze of the icons followed her.

I am searching the light, Ludmila Pawlowska says.

The gold signifies the light, the mercy of God. In many of her paintings Ludmila Pawlowska integrates artefacts such as iron parts from old wooden doors.

The work of art reminds us to keep on struggling towards the light, and the light will shine towards us.
